Over the past 15 years or so, many people have asked me about the state of Freemasonry in the United States. Several people have asked me to share my opinion on the similarities and differences between American and European Freemasonry. I have attempted to answer these questions in several lectures. In Freemasonry, the “Working Tools” are symbolic instruments derived from operative stonemasonry. Rather than being used to build physical structures, they are used metaphorically to help a Mason “build” his character and moral life.
The square, the compass, and the letter “G” are the most well-known symbols of Freemasonry. These are the central symbols of Freemasonry. They are linked to the spirit of the Old Testament, especially through the ideas of God’s order, justice, and harmony.
