About Freemasonry, not just Freemasons
We are pleased to present this paper prepared by the eminent Masonic Scholar, J. Fairbairn Smith, Editor Emeritus of the Detroit Masonic World. Raised as a “Lewis” at the age of 18, in the lodge at Hawick, Scotland, in 1925, Bro. Smith has become one of the most respected of Masonic journalists. He is a “mould stone” from the quarry of Masonic life.
Many researchers and theorists specializing in Freemasonry consider the role of Freemasons to be of importance in the development and maintenance of democratic societies. Based on democratic rights, it must be emphasized that the free flow of information and the protection of sources contribute to social development and the protection of individual rights. To answer the question, “What makes you a Freemason?” I conducted desk research online to determine what Freemasons think about their duties, obligations, and responsibilities. I have based my examination on two basic themes: I compared the ritual books and rituals of the different Masonic Orders, and I examined the international norms of Duty, Obligation, and Responsibility from a Masonic perspective.
